This is a Roald Dahl short story that is about a man called Michael Scofield that invite his friend Richard Pratt and his wife to dinner in Michaels house. Richard Pratt is a famous gourmet man that likes all types of wines and know them very well. While eating dinner Richard was very interested in Michaels daughter so he seated next to her and talked to her all dinner without even eating his own fish. Michel and Richard everytime they meet they make some bets about who knows which wine they are drinking. This night they also made a bet, Michael took a wine from his study and Richard need t tell what exact wine it was. Michael said that he would bet anything that Pratt wants, so Pratt taking it very serious what Michael said and he said that he want to bet the hand of her daughter in marriage. Michael was so sure that he was going to win because he said that his wines are good enough to be recognised so he convinced his daughter to accept the bet. After accepting the bet Michael went to his studio take out one wine and gave a glass to Pratt. Richard Pratt took his time deciding which wine it was and after tasting it many times and discarding some possibilities he said his final word. When he said his final answer Michael was quiet staring a the table and the rest of the guests were saint for Michael to show the tag of the wine. But sadly Pratt was correct and he "won the prize".
"He paused, his mouth full of wine, getting the first taste, then, he permitted some of it to trickle down his throat and I saw his Adam's apple move as it passed by". (4)
Here Roald Dahl appeals to the sense of sight because he was very descriptive at the moment of tasting the wine. In the image we can see how this person drinks and very carefully tasting every single mouthful of wine. Also we can see how the wine passes through his throught.
The protagonist of ti story is Michael Scofield, he is a very confident of himself. He is the type of person that we can how he is by looking his actions for example:
'So you'll bet me anything I like?' 'That's what I told you. I'll
bet you anything you damn well please, if you want to make an issue out of it.'
This reveals about the character that he is very sure of what he is doing or what he is betting. By teling Richard Pratt that he would bet anything he damn please then he would choose anything and Michael cant say no so that is why Pratt choosed the hand of her daughter in marriage.
