First Day as a Reciever

Jonas has been given his assignment of Reciever of Memory and he opened his folder an lokked at a printed sheet that said some instructions that he read them, he started questining himsel about the last one that said "you are allowed to lie", he was confused he had never lied he had been taught that but had their parents ever lied to him? Did they also recieved those instrctions? The next day Jonas entered the Annex were he realized that door in ther were locked. Jonas entered the locked door and saw the thousands ok books that were in there. There was the Reciever, that he told Jonas to call him The Giver, he allows Jonas to ask whatever he what but he didnt had a question. He continued and explained his task and that he will transmit some memories to Jonas from a long time ago. He said that the memories gives him wisdom but it weigheds him a lot, that was like going downhill through deep snow on a sled, but Jonas did not undestood what he said because he ha never seen a sled or snow or downhill. He tells Jonas to take his tunic, he turn off the speacker which surprises Jonas because no one has the ability to do that, and he puts his hands on Jonas back to transmit the memory of snow.

Jonas felt nothing but later he shivers and felt the cold air one part of him was on the Annex and the other at the top of a hill standing on a sled and he start sliding downhill and eventually it stopped. He explained Jonas that this memory was long ago and that climate control got rid of those things to make transportation and agriculture easier, he said that the community has sameness. The second memory Jonas recieve was sunshine, Jonas realized that this was before climate control. Before Jonas leave he asked why they warned him that it would be painful. So he recieved the memory of sun burn and Jonas said that hurt a LOT! pooor Jonas :(

- These quote makes me think that if they dont dont lock their doors is because they have absolute security in their community and that is why they dont have to fear anything. That also makes me think that they dont have privacy and maybe they dont need it because everyone is the "same" so you have nothing different and you dont need privacy.

8. You may lie.
- These is the last of the instruction that Jonas had inhis folder. This makes me think that know Jonas can say whatever he wants and nothing will happend, but it also brings me some questions like if everyone when recieve their assignment get the same instrctions and now everyone is lying and also if Jonas parents are not telling the truth to him. 

"Ouch," he said loudly, and shifted on the bed. "Owwww," he said,
wincing at the shift, and even moving his mouth to speak made his
face hurt.
 - this quote make me think that as The Giver talked about climate control Jonas and the people from the community had never felt something like that, that pain that mekaes you skin pretty, because everything is the same they have no season no anything everything is the same. Sameness. 

Final thoughts
These last chapter that i read of the Giver brought me some questions as i already wrote, but it was very intersenting the thing about giving Jonas the memories and making him feel something new was very interesting. 


  

Life as an adult

Finally is time for the Ceremonies. The first day the nurturers present the newborn babies to their assigned families and give them their names. Also was the ceremony of Loss that was because of the death of this little kid named Caleb, the family that loss the kid got another baby named Caleb again. After the ceremony of Two Three Four Fives Six Sevens and finally eight. It was Lily's turn, she got her identifying jacket with pockets. The next day they sit in order of their numbers given at birth. Jonas was number 19 by his sides he has Fiona and Asher. It was almost Jonas turn he was nervous the chief of elder called 18 Asher was given his assignment she went back to her sit and then the chief of elder called number 20, she skipped Jonas! Jonas was really concerned, he thought that

was a mistake and that he would be called later, but it did not happened. Everybody was murmuring about what happened, Jonas was thinking any bad thing he had made and asked himself why did she skipped him? Later when everyone was called the chief of elder explained everyone that she did not made a mistake that she in purpose skipped Jonas. She said that Jonas will be the next Receiver of Memory he had the qualities necessary Intelligence, Integrity, Courage and that he will be trained to get wisdom. They had seen him grow and that this would not be a wrong decision. Jonas was very confused of what his assignment was, we turned around looked everybody was looking at him and the Thing that 'changed' happened again, he saw the people change like the apple and that effect just disappeared in a blink. The people started chanting his name. JONAS JONAS JONAS JONAS

"Jonas was identified as a possible Receiver many years ago. We have observed him 

meticulously. There were no dreams of uncertainty.  

"He has shown all of the qualities that a Receiver must have." (62)

 - When i read this part of the story i saw that the members of the community are fully 

observed since they are born so that way they dont choose wrong your assignment, that

 is why they know that Jonas has the qualities. So maybe what i can infer about yhis is 

that your life in this community is all controled and prepared so if you had absolute 

freedom in what you choose then this will change your future. 

 But when he looked out across the crowd, the sea of faces, the  thing happened again.  

The thing that had happened with the apple.   They changed. (64) 

-When i read this part of the book i predicted that what changed was the color i dont know 

why but i predicted the same when the thing that something changed happened with the 

apple, I maybe thought how could size change? But i still what to answer this question of 

what really changes and why does this only happens to Jonas? Or does this also happens to 

someone else but they dont actually say it. 

Final Thoughts     
In these last chapters i read i can see that the community has your life made up and you can't 

change it, you have to follow the rules. The ceremonies has something new to give you but you

can't have that before, for example bicycles you earn them at nine not before not after. People

in this community dont actually had the chance to choose something; except volunteer hours, 

so they don't know what it is to choose so they dont protest, they live like everybody else and

no one is different and thats all.     

 

The Giver Chapter 1-5

Summary
Trough chapters 1-5 from The Giver it shows us a very differnt style of life, their community and all those rules they have to follow or thei would be "released".
    The story begins with an Eleven called Jonas thinking what to say in his night ritual. Jonas was trying to find the right word to describe how he was feeling, after a long time he decided aprehensive, he feels aprehensive about the upcoming ceremony. His father explained Jonas that in the ceremony of twelve you recieve your Assignment that you will be doing for the rest of your life, when it was father's turn to say what were his feelings he sayed that he was concearned about a baby he was taking care of, he was not doing well, father wanted to take the baby home so Jonas Lily and Mother agreed. The next day Father told his family that he sneaked to the list were it sayed the name of this baby that was not good he went to number thirty six and there he was, Gabriel. Father was not suposed to look up the name of the kid, it was a rule, but he thought that if he calls him by his name (always when no one is listening) then his nurturing will improve. Father also comments another rule he 'broke' is that he taught her sister how to ride the bicycle after the ceremony of nine (until you have the ceremony of nine you cant ride a bicycle). Jonas and his parents were talkink that the comitee has to think a lot and that takes a lot of time to have the assignments for everyone that is turning twelve, Jonas had not an idea of what his assignment could be but his friend group will change he will meet new pople with his same assignment. The night end with mom telling Lili that her comfort object will be taken away when she turns eight. Father brings Gabe home and Jonas notices that he has lighter eyes, almost everyone in the community had dark eyesexcept the baby Jonas and a girl from Five. Talking about differences was considered something rude. Lily commented she wanted to be a birthmother but her mother surprised sayed that that was not an Assignment with little honor and that she only get three births and and after that they are Laborers until they enter the House of the Old.

Jonas suggested that she could be a Speaker because she never stop talking, he remembered when one day an announcement was directed to him because he took and apple home, he was playing with Asher (his friend) to catch the apple and when the apple was in the air something changed he took the apple home to examinate it more but he never understood what happened with that apple. Jonas went to the House of the Old and finds Asher and his friend Fiona they were helping the olds, Jonas took a women called Larissa to bath her. They were talking about the Release celebration of Roberto, they talked about the whole life of Roberto and compare it to Ednas life who was a birthmother and her life had nothing interesting. Jonas ask Larissa if she knows were exactly they go when people are Released but she sayed that maybe only the comitee know that but that Roberto was very happy anywhere he was going. The next morning they had teir morning rituals that consisted on telling what you dreamed. When was Jonas turn to say what he dreamed he sayed that he was standing in the tub without shirt and Fiona was also there and he wanted her to take off her clothes and get in the tub so he could bathe her. He felt wanting. Mother sayed to Jonas that his dream was his first stirrings and that he should start taking a pill for them. He remembers that Asher and his parents also take pills every morning and that stirrings should be reported to be treated. Mother tells him that he should remember to take them by his own until he gets to the House of the Old.

But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path

of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had--well, this was the part that he couldn't adequately understand--the apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had

changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple.

Unchanged. The same size and shape:(24) 

-When i read this part of the book i felt confused and i started asking myself things i felt like Jonas, confused. I predict that what maybe chnged was the color. What really changed about the apple? Why did this happened? It was only Jonas who noticed that? Why?

Now he swallowed the small pill that his mother handed him. "That's all?" he

asked.

"That's all," she replied, returning the bottle to the cupboard. "But you mustn't

forget. I'll remind you for the first weeks, but then you must do it on your own. If you forget, the Stirrings will come back. The dreams of Stirrings will come back. Sometimes the dosage must be adjusted."

"Asher takes them," Jonas confided.

His mother nodded, unsurprised. "Many of your group mates probably do. The males, at least. And they all will, soon. Females too."

"How long will I have to take them?"

"Until you enter the House of the Old," she explained.

"All of your adult life. But it becomes routine; after a while you won't even pay much attention to it."…But the feelings had disappeared. The Stirrings were gone. 

When I read these part we talked with the class and we sayed that they had to take the pills because they have birthmothers and cant have internal releationship. But i am still confused about why it was something that is required tratmen? Why do they have to take pills? What happends if stirring are back because you forgot to take the pills? Are stirrings bad? 

Final thoughts

I think this is a very strict comunity were you need to follow ruled or otherwise you are released. I dont like that much that since you are orn you life is already made up, each ceremony you got something and before that you cant have it. But somethings i liked for exaple the night rituals of telling your feeling and the morning ritual of telling you dreams but i ill like it more if it id optional to share it. I want to keep reading the book so that i can answer some questions that i have and proof if some of my predictions were right or wrong.  

Should government control us?

          Government should put laws over the city but they have to be fair and necessary but citizens should be able to progress and make their own decisions. If a government would be on everything and make our own decisions citizens would not like that anhd as it had happened times ago the citizens will try to assassinate them and we wouldn't want that. 

        While i was watching the Tuman show i realized that there the government, which was Christof, had all the control over it citizen, Truman. I totally desagree about what Christof was doig to Truman because Truman had not the option to choose wether he satys in Seaheaven, the city biuld up for him, or go to the outer world where he could find real friends and people. In these show the government had all the control over Truman, when Truman was little he wanted to be an explorer and learn about new stuff but since he lived in Seaheven he could not get out of there or the show could not continue so al the actors, actreses kept Truman in Seaheaven.

         As i sayed the overnment should not have as much control over us, the citizens. We or unless me wouldnt want to live in a fake world with fake family friends and everything that surrounds you. if i had an option chose tol stay in Seaheven or go to the outer world i wolg go and eexplore and learn new cultures because that is part of life and also expiriencing some fear.
